A recent online article featured in the eMissourian reported that local, state and federal police have found that Methamphetamine is currently trafficked in large quantities to the Kansas City area of Missouri. The states of Nebraska and Oklahoma are also trafficking destinations. The Meth is distributed throughout the Midwestern states from these targeted geographical locations.

Methamphetamine Trafficking

The December, 2014, eMissourian article reports that Franklin County, Missouri, is not new to Methamphetamine labs, having a long history of being troubled by their presence. Changes in trafficking patterns and legislation have led to a decrease in Meth Labs, even while the use of the drug, itself, is increasing. Investigation by the Franklin County Narcotics Enforcement Unit in 2014 revealed there some factors currently influencing a decrease in growth of Meth labs.

One factor cited in the article as influencing the four-year decline in Meth lab growth was adoption of laws requiring a prescription to obtain medications containing pseudophedrine, both at the city and county level. Pseudophedrine is the essential to making Meth.

Another influencing factor reported in the article was cited as the enormous quantities of crystal meth currently being brought into the United States from Mexico. The Mexican crystal meth is manufactured in “super labs”, and trafficked into the United States across the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico.

Drug task forces shifted their focus as a result of identifying Kansas City, Oklahoma and Nebraska as Methamphetamine distribution channels. The focus is now on the sources bringing the Mexican crystal meth into the U.S.

According to the article, drug task force investigators ascertained that individuals pool their funds, and then travel to the Kansas City area to buy meth. Upon returning to their own local area, they will sell smaller quantities of the meth locally to make their profit.

The small-time dealers then re-invest their profits, repeating the cycle of buying and re-selling the drug. The investigation showed-up that some buyers make daily trips to the dealers selling the imported Mexican crystal meth.

  • The destructive and toxic chemicals used in methamphetamine manufacture include such chemicals as battery acid, antifreeze, drain cleaner and lantern fluid.
  • The potential damage and physical effects caused by crystal meth use can be permanent as a result of significant use of the drug over time.
  • Methamphetamine use over time causes tissue damage, constriction of blood vessels, decay of the user’s teeth, and lackluster skin.
  • When hallucinating, the meth user can experience the sensation of “meth mites”—imaginary bugs—crawling under the skin. The resultant picking at the skin causes observable sores.
  • Meth, its use and acquisition, becomes the meth-addict’s single focus in life.
  • It is common that the meth addict cannot see they are in need of help.
