Oklahoma Legislature Tries to Address Epidemic with New Law

The Oklahoma legislature has made several attempts to introduce legislation that would curb the prescription drug abuse problem. One such law would have required doctors to check a state-wide data base when prescribing an addictive painkiller to ensure the patient didn’t already have a prescription from another doctor. This bill was killed by medical groups who lobbied against it, citing time constraints and the unreasonable burden it would place upon doctors. Another bill attempted to require a check of the data base every 90 days. This bill was also defeated by the same medical groups. The latest attempt, introduced by Representative Doug Cox would require a check every 180 days. This bill has met with less resistance and will likely pass both the House and the Senate.

Hydrocodone, the main component of Vicodin, and oxycodone, the main component of Percoset and Oxycontin, along with some other heavily prescribed medications, are highly addictive and are classified as narcotics. Also known as “opiods,” (from their resemblance to opium and its derivatives, like heroin) narcotics such as hydrocodone have a powerful effect upon the body’s central nervous system. They interfere with the pain signals sent along the nerves, and are therefore used to treat severe pain.

Until the last few decades, strong painkillers were only used to treat pain in acute situations (such as in recovery from surgery or pain from certain cancers.) In the 1990’s, however, drug manufacturers began heavily promoting the use of powerful narcotics to treat all sorts of pain, both acute and chronic. Not surprisingly, prescription painkiller abuse and addiction, as well as deaths from overdoses, immediately began to rise. In fact, overdose deaths spiked from four-thousand to more than sixteen-thousand by 2010.

Drug Rehabilitation Can Save Lives and Restore Happiness

Legislation is certainly important in the fight against prescription drug abuse. With medical lobbies balking strong measures, only allowing weakened versions to reach the floor for a vote, the prescription drug abuse epidemic is unlikely to be drastically reduced by such measures alone. What is needed is an effective education campaign coupled with a drug rehabilitation program that gets real, predictable results.

A thorough detoxification is the first step in a successful treatment program. Through the use of various vitamins, minerals and a range of facilities, an addict first removes from their body any trace of the drugs they have been taking. Drugs often lodge in the fatty tissues and then have a lingering effect on the mind and body, even years after a person stops taking them. The detoxification program removes the drug deposits, freeing the addict’s body from the physical effects of the drugs.

No drug rehabilitation program is going to be effective without addressing the mental conditions and various life situations confronting the addict. There were reasons, both physical and mental, that the person turned to drugs in the first place. Usually drugs represent an escape of some sort from the realities of life. An effective drug rehabilitation will be able to identify the true causes of drug addiction and then provide the addict with solutions that do not involve chemical substances. In other words, the person is given tools that are immediately applicable in life, and that can be used to prevent relapses and a return to drug addiction.
