deck the hallsDeck the Halls is one of our cherished Christmas carols whose history dates back to 16th century Wales, when it was a dancing song. The lyrics of the song were originally written for publication by John Ceirog Hughes, a Welsh poet. It is thought that Welsh miners immigrating to the Appalachian Mountains brought the lyrics of the song with them to America, and it has been sung as we know it today in America for a century or more. Though the words may have evolved over time, the spirit of the song remains intact; and it is a long-standing holiday tradition to “Deck the halls with boughs of holly.”

Holidays at Narconon Arrowhead

The activities and celebration of holidays at Narconon Arrowhead are an important part of observing the true meaning of this time year, and are a way for the drug and alcohol rehabilitation and education center to give back to the community. It is also gives those individuals on the rehab program during the holiday season opportunities to help and contribute to others in the true spirit of the season.

The long-term residential rehab center which is located in Southeastern Oklahoma is dedicated to saving lives from substance abuse every day of the year, just as it is throughout the holiday season. Since first opening its doors in Oklahoma two decades ago, the center has helped thousands of addicts break the chains of addiction, and return to society able to live productive and drug-free lives.

The executives and staff of Narconon Arrowhead have long known that a vital part of rehabilitating the alcoholic and the drug addict is the person learning to give back to others—rather than just taking. It is also vital for the person to once again re-experience the emotions which are part of life and living, and which become deadened by the abuse of chemical substances. And it is vital for the person to once again learn how to help themselves and others, and once again become a valuable member of society.

The traditional holiday activities at the facility which include participation in local community festivities as well as activities hosted at the center, all provide opportunities for individuals on the Narconon program to be a part of the holiday season, and contribute to and help others.

Deck the Halls

The launch of “Deck the Halls” begins on December 6th with the raising of the traditional Christmas tree in the high-ceilinged main lodge of the facility. A few days after the tree-raising, a “Decking the Halls Party” brings together staff and students on the program to decorate the lodge with the traditional festive decorations of the season.

December 15th finds the center staff and clients on the rehab program holding a Christmas talent show in the facility’s main auditorium. All are welcomed and invited to showcase their talents. There are traditionally a number of talented artists and musician—both staff and students — who share the performance and musical talents with all in attendance.

Throughout this time, the Narconon Arrowhead Holiday Pantry is ongoing in its efforts, gathering donations of money, food, and personal items to be shared with needy residents in local communities. The center has been providing this holiday service to the community for over 8 years, supporting the effort with fund-raising bake sales, and various donations.

The Narconon Arrowhead parade float is another of the holiday traditions at the facility. Designed and built by staff and students, it participates in the McAlester Christmas Parade in McAlester, Oklahoma, carrying its drug-free message to attendees who line the parade route.

Gary W. Smith, Executive Director of Narconon Arrowhead, notes that by participating in these holiday events and activities, “the former addict can once again realize what life has to offer during a time of love and generosity.”

The executives and staff of Narconon Arrowhead continue to provide their drug prevention education and rehabilitation services throughout the holiday season. For more information call 800-468-6933.
