Crack cocaine is a type of cocaine that is smoked. Crack usually is seen in a rock form and the term comes from the cracking sound heard when it is smoked.

Approximately 25 million people in the U.S. use cocaine at least once in their lifetime. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that over 13 percent of all drug rehab admissions are for cocaine.

It is not just career criminals who are addicted to crack: students and people with families and careers also abuse this drug. While career criminals and inner city dwellers were the primary users when crack first hit the streets, today the drug is being used in every neighborhood in the United States.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that nearly 15 percent of all Americans have tried cocaine with over 6 percent using the drug by their senior year in high school. In addition, there were almost 2 million cocaine users during the last survey done in 2008.
