If you have a family member or friend that needs the help of a professional rehab center, you’re going to need to research what types of rehab are available. Once you have sorted out what the different types of rehab are and what they have to offer, you can set about getting the exact treatment plan that your loved one needs in order to get sober again.
1. Outpatient programs
An outpatient program is one where the client goes in and visits with counselors for a short amount of time on a daily or weekly basis. He is not living at the rehab center, so there is no way to really control whether or not he has stopped using drugs. He is simply speaking with someone or receiving drug treatment in such a manner that the rehabilitation center doesn’t need to hold him overnight.
This type of rehab has the convenience of being a place you can drop into when it is convenient or fits your schedule. It is also significantly cheaper than other forms of rehab because you do not have to pay for a room or food.
The drawbacks of this type of rehab is that it is not very effective. Addicts have a chemical problem in their bodies and brains that is forcing them to continue using drugs. You can’t stop this from continuing to happen by just talking.
An additional problem is that many of these outpatient treatment programs try to handle drug addiction by giving the addict more drugs. You’re hooked on heroin? Here, have some methadone. It’s essentially the same thing, but many treatment centers feel that it will help addicts “come down” from heroin. They don’t. They simply take the methadone in addition to heroin in order to get an even longer, better high.
2. Fixed length residential treatment
A better idea is residential treatment. This is where you are checking into a rehab program to stay there. It’s similar to a spa or a hotel, but the purpose for checking in is to get off drugs. You might be able to relax at these centers, as many are built and set up to almost be like a vacation spot. Many celebrities and the rich go to this type of rehab after they have gotten in trouble with the law for a DUI.
One of the main problems with this type of center is that it has a fixed length of treatment. You pay for a length of time, such as thirty days. At the end of that thirty days, you have to leave or pay for more time. It doesn’t matter whether or not you are actually sober – time’s up!
3. Unfixed length residential treatment
The best type of treatment program is the residential treatment program that does not have a fixed length. You pay your fee to get treatment, and the center keeps you on until that product is achieved. There aren’t many rehab centers like this in America, but Narconon Arrowhead is one of them.
Arrowhead doesn’t care about how long a client needs to stay. The goal is to get every client permanently sober, so they can stay as long as they need to in order to make this happen. If that’s thirty days, then so be it. If the client needs three months or even six to get completely clean, then that is perfectly fine. The goal is sobriety, not making a profit from turning over clients at a set rate.
