The words baby boomer and binge drinking do not seem to go hand in hand. But, according to a recent survey they are one of the main groups in the country suffering with problems with alcohol use and dependence and are looking to have an even greater problem over the next decade.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as the demographics shift with aging baby boomers, there will be even more people considered older adults in the country. Statistics indicate that the numbers will go from 33 million up to 80 million. This is over the next 20 years.

While those over 65 usually consume a lesser amount of alcohol than those in the younger age group, it is assumed that they will have less of a problem with alcohol use. However, according to the recent studies done more than 30% of individuals over 65 had consumed alcohol in a 30 day period. What’s more surprising is that nearly 6% of older adults engaged in binge drinking on a regular basis.

The information from the survey was pulled from older adults who were admitted to health clinics, hospitals and emergency rooms indicating that many baby boomers abuse alcohol after age 48.

Binge Drinking Risks For Baby Boomers

Above and beyond the risks for alcohol addiction and dependence, there are many health problems that can occur with baby boomers who are consuming too much alcohol.

Some of the most common include alcohol related accidents and injuries like broken bones or fractures or traffic accidents. When a baby boomers or older adults are using prescription drugs mixed with alcohol, the possibility of these situations occurring increases dramatically.

There are many health problems associated with binge drinking and older adults as well. These include:

•    Impaired brain functions.
•    Slow reaction time.
•    Loss of memory.
•    Loss of balance and loss of motor skills.
•    Loss of body heat.
•    Certain cancers.
•    Stroke
•    Liver Disease
•    Cirrhosis of the liver.
•    Kidney damage.
•    Brain damage.

Why Baby Boomers Abuse Alcohol

Like any other age group baby boomers start to abuse alcohol because they feel that it provides them with some solution to a problem they are having. Unlike those in the younger generations, the problems usually differ amongst older adults.

Some of the primary concerns or problems of alder adults that cause them to abuse alcohol after the age of 48 include stress about retirement, financial concerns or problems, health issues, worry about children and younger family members and fear of getting older.

To deal with these issues one begins to drink alcohol and then starts using the substance more and more. Because of alcohol tolerance they also have to user larger amounts for the same effect. Eventually they are dealing with a full-blown alcohol dependence problem.
