Low self-esteem and depression are often linked to addiction. Drug abuse appears to be a solution to both, when in fact it ultimately exacerbates the problem. There are a number of other ways to build self-esteem and overcome depression without turning to drugs or alcohol.
Addiction and Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem can be the result of any number of situations. It can stem from bullying or ridicule, which can occur at school or in the workplace. It can come from a defect, birth-mark, or other physical aspect that one feels is something to be ashamed of. Media paints a picture of the ideal image that leaves many fighting to fit in, leading to anorexia and other disorders.
Drugs seem to be the solution. One drinks or takes drugs and feels happy, confident and uninhibited. Not only that, when one has low self-esteem, it is difficult to contend with friends who do it or encourage it. It becomes a way to fit in, to be accepted.
But what happens after the drugs wear off? Not only do the novel feelings of confidence and happiness disappear, depression returns and is often more pronounced. The body becomes dependent on drugs to feel normal, which is how addiction begins.
While drugs seem to be the solution, in the long run, they make feelings of low self-esteem and depression even worse.
Get Active To Feel Better
There are alternative, more effective solutions to depression. It all starts with a decision.
The first thing to do is get active. Pull yourself off the couch, bench, bed or chair that you are slumped on and force yourself to do something. Go for a walk. Enroll in yoga. Go for a swim. Directing your attention outward will do wonders to take your mind off your depression. Exercise also increases circulation and elevates mood.
Find activities that you’ve always dreamed of but never had the courage to try. Enroll in an art class. Travel. Join a book club. Do anything you can to stay busy in a manner that is most comfortable for you.
Other Natural Solutions to Depression
There are a number of other solutions to depression, including:
- Dietary changes, such as removing food that one is allergic to and including food that is rich in vitamins and minerals (such as fruits and vegetables).
Nutrient deficiencies can be a major factor in depression.
- Exercise, as this releases endorphins and other feel-good hormones. It is also exhilarating.
- Finding friends that boost your self-confidence. Those who make snide remarks or subtle cracks about your image or personality do not belong in your life.
- Changing your environment, such as moving to a nicer location or sprucing up the home or office you are currently in.
Regardless of what method you choose to combat depression, drugs or alcohol are not the solution. It comes from a firm decision and a lifestyle change, and finding activities that make you happy.
