6 Downward spiralDrug-addicted individuals have a very poor quality of life, if their continued existence can even be considered “life”.  They usually have very few and very rundown belongings, if any, little or no real friends (as distinct from partners in getting high), little or no connections with family and no job.  To sober individuals, such a life seems obviously of poor quality and quite undesirable, and so it can be difficult to understand why someone would choose to continue their drug use and this way of life.  What may seem obvious to drug-free individuals, however, is sometimes completely hidden to the drug addict.

The obvious drug addicts you see wandering the streets or being arrested by police are not a completely thorough view of all drug addicts.  The condition wherein a drug addict’s life is entirely dictated by their drug use is one of the final and more serious phases of drug addiction.  The path through the various phases of addiction can be likened to a frog in a pot of water that is slowly being heated – the addict essentially comes to the point where they are “boiling to death” without realizing it.

The downward spiral of addiction is discussed in “The Truth About Becoming Addicted”, a new booklet recently released by Narconon Arrowhead.  The booklet addresses the nature of addiction, the various worsening effects of drug addiction, and the methods by which an individual can successfully resolve their problems with addiction.

As discussed in the booklet, drug use that leads to addiction usually begins with a problem in the individual’s life.  It may be an upset within their family, financial stress, job loss or physical pain that drives an individual to use drugs.  As their drug use continues, the individual can feel guilt or shame and can withdraw more from those around them.  They may even feel resentful of others around them, and avoid normal relationships and activities.  They look to drugs to help cover up these new problems, sinking further into addiction.  Without help, an addict can take his own life with drugs – whether purposely or accidentally, and finally end the downward spiral caused by addiction.

Addiction Affects More as Time Goes on

Addiction is a complex and difficult problem and as time goes on it becomes worse. That is, if it is not treated. The downward spiral is just that; a gradual or quick progression where a drug or alcohol users life becomes much more difficult and complicated because of his or her use.

Some of the things that can be affected by drug use include:

  1. Family relationships, fighting, general arguments, loss of love and support and alienation.
  2. Finances including not having money, inability to pay bills or handle general responsibility and financial crimes committed because of substance abuse and addiction.
  3. Lost production in the workplace. The inability to carry out simple tasks; loss of competence and focus in handling work in general. Workplace accidents, missed work and general unaccountability.
  4. Legal difficulties that can range from divorce and the fees connected to DUI (Driving Under the Influence), arrests for drugs or intoxication.
  5. General unhappiness, drop in mental health and the effects of this. For some this would be symptoms of depression, anxiety, bi-polar or other.
  6. Difficulties with physical health. One could be sick more often or suffer from a disease or illness because of addiction.

So, what’s the solution?

The Narconon program is a holistic, unique approach to drug rehabilitation that is proven to be successful by recent outcome studies as well as staff and client surveys.  Following a period wherein the individual is assisted as comfortably as possible through drug withdrawal by vitamins and body assists, the individual then participates in a sauna detox program to help rid their body of residual drug toxins.  Program participants also receive counseling and participate in a series of life skills courses that are designed to help them become more aware of their present environment, help them become more responsible for their lives, and help them become more aware of their life conditions and how to improve them.   According to research studies, a majority of Narconon program graduates maintain sobriety, thus showing that the program effectively assists individuals in halting and reversing the downward spiral of addiction.
