Narconon Arrowhead is one of the largest and most successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment facilities in Oklahoma. The long-term, residential rehabilitation facility can house up to two hundred individuals at a time, and is located in a beautiful, rustic lodge overlooking Oklahoma’s largest lake. As part of the unique Narconon Arrowhead rehabilitation experience, program students, graduates and staff attend weekly graduation ceremonies.
The Narconon Program
In 1966, Arizona State Prison inmate William Benitez was searching for a solution to his problems with heroin addiction when he came across a book written by L. Ron Hubbard. In reading the book, Benitez came to understand more about himself and what he needed to do to handle his addiction. More importantly, Benitez decided that he needed to share his insights with others. With help from prison officials, Benitez established the Narconon program in his prison. Narconon has since grown to over one hundred facilities worldwide and has helped many thousands of individuals achieve sobriety.
The Narconon program is a holistic, unique approach to drug rehabilitation. Following a period wherein the individual is assisted as comfortably as possible through drug withdrawal by vitamins and body assists, the individual then participates in a sauna detox program to help rid their body of residual drug toxins. Program participants also receive counseling and participate in a series of life skills courses that are designed to help them become more aware of their present environment, help them become more responsible for their lives, and help them become more aware of their life conditions and how to improve them. According to independent research studies, seventy percent of Narconon program graduates maintain sobriety.
Narconon Arrowhead Graduation Ceremonies
While many individuals who suffer from substance abuse may wish that there were some miraculous and quick solution to their problem, few erroneously believe that attaining sobriety will be a simple task. In fact, some individuals continue to feed their addictions simply because it seems easier than facing the sometimes overwhelming difficulties associated with drug withdrawal. Nevertheless, an individual who genuinely wishes to push through the difficulties toward sobriety may feel their resolve weaken when the road becomes especially rocky. It is at these times that they most need support.
Participating in a successful drug treatment program can provide an individual with a fair amount of support and encouragement. Pats on the back, counseling and encouragement from center staff is important, but hearing about the struggles and successes of others who have fought substance abuse and gained valuable footing or won completely can be highly inspiring. It is for this very reason that Narconon Arrowhead holds weekly graduation ceremonies.
Once a week the Narconon Arrowhead staff and students join together and celebrate the accomplishments of current students and program graduates. Graduates of the full Narconon program are sent off in style, their success and achievements acknowledged and celebrated by everyone in attendance. The graduation host also takes the time to acknowledge students who have finished courses in the program, encouraging them to step up and share their experiences. Quite a few of these talks are inspirational and motivational, the students encouraging others to continue to work hard and push through the program despite any difficulties they encounter, knowing full well that the happiness achieved at the conclusion of the course and the program is well worth the effort.
Recently, a Narconon Arrowhead staff member spoke at graduation to share the fact that he has been sober for five years. This statement was met with applause and support from other staff and students alike. Another recent graduation included a program student’s request that the graduation host share their own wins with the Narconon program, indicating the student’s interest in success stories and similar experience.
While Narconon Arrowhead’s graduation celebrations acknowledge students for their efforts during the program and graduates for their achievements, one of it’s most important functions is to demonstrate that success is possible and well worth the hard work done to attain it.
