Most drug addicts live their lives in a vicious cycle of being dependent on drugs and not being able to quit even when they know their use is ruining their lives. Addiction affects people of all ages and backgrounds, and unfortunately no one is immune from its destructive effects.
Narconon Arrowhead recently released the story of Liberty, a woman who was losing the battle against her addiction. Before finding help at Narconon her life was spiraling out of control and on her own she found herself unable to quit using the drugs that were causing all of her problems. Her story is a detailed account of how she got addicted, what happened to her as a result, and how she is today now that she is living a drug free life.
Addiction Can Affect Anyone
When you think of a drug addict you might think of a homeless person living in an inner city begging for change on the corner to try to get their next fix. You might think of broken homes, or child abuse, dropping out of school, or running away from home.
Liberty tells of growing up on a ranch with loving parents in a country town. About learning the value of working hard at an early age, and how she was taught about personal values and morals. She talks about finishing high school, going on to college, and how she raised four children.
For all intents and purposes Liberty lived a normal life. Ten years ago she had medical issues that required surgery, for which she was prescribed pain killers. These prescriptions started her on the road to addiction as she realized she not only liked the pain killing effects of the pills, but also thought that they put her in a better emotional state. She says she started abusing her medication for this emotional lift, and that before she knew it she was addicted.
After six years of abuse her life started to fall apart. She lost her friends, her children, and her sense of self-respect. She describes her addiction as a demon inside of her, a demon that she couldn’t say no to. In her dependence she found that she no longer cared about herself, and would wake up each day vowing that she wasn’t going to use anymore. Each day she would break this vow, and found herself overwhelmed with feelings of shame and guilt.
How Narconon Arrowhead Treatment Helped
Through all of her ups and downs, Liberty says her family was always nearby. It was difficult for her to admit what they already knew, that she was an addict and needed help to get clean. At some point she fell far enough to hit bottom, and was able to reach out to her family, admit her problem, and receive their help.
Her family called Narconon Arrowhead where she would spend the next four months in treatment. She describes her experience as being very rocky at times, but credits the staff for being able to help her get through her tough times. During this process she says she regained her self-respect, realized she was not a worthless drug addict, and emerged with a will to live again.
After completing her treatment she decided to stay at Narconon to work with other addicts. She says that by helping others she is rewarded daily by seeing people with the same problems she had regaining their self-respect and getting their lives back.
Through her journey of helping others she has her children back in her life, and says that her family is thrilled to have the old Liberty back. She says she is doing truly amazing, and says that shows that the Narconon program really works.
