Between 2010 and early 2012, twelve people in Canada died after they used ecstasy laced with a toxic, powerful drug. While ecstasy is expected to consist of the chemical 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), in this case, the colored pills in question were found to contain paramethoxymethamphetamine (PMMA), more powerful and more toxic than MDMA.

PMMA has similar effects to MDMA, but takes longer to kick in. It’s possible that some people may have taken the contaminated ecstasy, not seen the result they wanted and then took more. This could have then resulted in an overdose death.

Most of the world’s ecstasy comes from the Netherlands, but in recent years, Canada has been the source of a significant amount of the drug that arrives in the US. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, it’s commonplace for pills sold as ecstasy to contain an unpredictable combination of drugs, including methamphetamine, ketamine, ephedrine, cocaine, dextromethorphan and others.

Two nineteen-year old people in Calgary have been arrested for selling PMMA-tainted ecstasy but these arrests do not trace the contamination back to its source.

Dangerous Contaminants Can be Present In Many Illicit Drugs

Heroin and cocaine are often cut with anything dealers can get their hands on. In recent years, cocaine has been cut with levamisole, a veterinary de-wormer that attacks blood vessels supplying the skin. Use of this cocaine can resulted in progressive tissue death requiring amputation of noses, ears, skin and other superficial body parts.

Heroin has been found to be cut with sugar, starch, quinine or the poison strychnine. When heroin was cut with fentanyl several years ago, thirty-three people died. Fentanyl is an opiate that is as much as fifty times stronger than heroin.

Narconon Reviews Indicate Some People Driven To Take Risks Due to Addiction

A rational, un-addicted person can make the decision to leave drugs alone so they can avoid these risks. But an addicted person may not be able to make this choice. Cravings will drive him or her back to drug abuse, even when the damage is obvious. The fact that drugs lower one’s awareness helps blot out the disastrous effects that are taking place.

To save someone from risk when they are already addicted, it takes getting them to an effective rehabilitation program. For many people, this is the only way they can stop themselves from using illicit drugs, abusing prescription drugs or alcohol is through the services of an addiction recovery program that really gets to the bottom of the addiction problem.

At Narconon Arrowhead in Oklahoma, thousands of people have found this solution. Using a recovery technology founded forty-five years ago, Narconon Arrowhead offers a well-rounded approach to recovery. It starts with a withdrawal experience described by many as much more tolerable than the one they went through at prior rehabs. Generous nutritional supplementation and continuous one-on-one work with Narconon staff help lift a person out of the physical and emotional strain of coming off drugs.

A thorough detoxification phase quickly follows withdrawal. Using time in a low-heat sauna, more nutritional supplements and daily exercise, this program activates the body’s ability to flush out old drug toxins. The elimination of these toxins that have been found to be involved in the triggering of cravings very often results in the elimination of the cravings that have been driving a person back into drug use.

After this, the development of drug-free life skills is essential. Each person learns how to recover self-esteem and maintain it, choose associates who will not lead him or her back into drug abuse, and many other skills.

Narconon reviews indicate that a substantial majority of graduates lead clean and sober lives after they go home.
