We Can Just Get Help Right After Christmas… Right?

depressed woman during holidays

The holidays are the time of the year that we spend with our family and friends. We enjoy each other’s company, reflecting on the year, catching up with loved ones we have not seen in a while. The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year—or at least that is what we want them to be.

But not everyone is lucky to have the perfect Holiday Season.

People trapped by addiction struggle even harder during the season. If they are not trying to hide their problems and trying to even avoid being with family and loved ones, most addicts feel shunned by family and might feel as though they are constantly being judged by everyone around them. Sometimes an addict might not feel like they are wanted at family gatherings at all, or their guilty feeling and attempts to hide their problem makes them stay away.

Studies clearly show that drug and alcohol usage increases during the holiday season, when many struggle with their addiction. In fact, if you Google “grief and the holidays” you would get a whopping 19,200,000 results. Increased stress during the holiday season is not unusual but to an addict, this can be devastating.

Deadliest months for drug and alcohol induced deaths since 1999

Since December of 1999, there have been 90,665 people who have died from drug and alcohol abuse in the month of December. Statistically, December is the deadliest month for those entrapped by drug and alcohol abuse.

Sometimes as a loved one, we are the only ones that can help a loved one who has fallen into addiction. We are that answer or silver lining for the person who is struggling.

Do not wait until after the holidays. Get help for yourself or your loved ones now. After all, this is the season of giving, the season of love. And what more could you gift our loved ones than a drug-free life?
