When you walk down the street in America, it may be impossible to tell who is addicted to drugs, so the actual number of people who are addicted may surprise you. According to the latest statistics from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, one out of every 14 Americans is struggling with either drug or alcohol addiction.

The survey is called the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Over time, this survey shows the growing problem with substance abuse and addiction that exists in this country. According to the 2011 report, more than 22 million people abused an illicit drug in 2010 (which includes misusing a prescription drug). The percentage of people currently abusing drugs is significantly higher than it was in 2008, having gone from 8.0% to just below 9%. An additional 700,000 people abusing prescription drugs contributes to this higher number.

Nearly 17 million people reported that they were heavy drinkers, constituting 6.7% of the population aged 12 and older. Of course, the most frequently abused illicit drug was marijuana, with more than 17 million current users.

Just the use of illicit drugs alone is estimated to cost this country $193 billion dollars each year. This cost includes incarceration, law enforcement, drug interdiction, welfare, foster care for children, drug lab cleanup, prevention and treatment services.

But when you are talking about the numbers of people who are addicted to drugs, you are not telling the whole story. The real story of addiction is played out in a home where a mother or father is trying to save a beloved child from addiction, or where a child hopes to help a parent stop drinking or doing drugs. Or in any one of a hundred other scenarios. Addiction results in broken hearts, broken homes and broken dreams.
