America and Addiction

Which members of your family or close friends are or have been addicted to drugs?

If you can answer this question with one or more names, you are not alone.

According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in August 2017, 46% of adults in the U.S. said they have a family member or close friend who is or has been addicted to drugs. It is the same percentage of men and women (46% each), for Democrats and Republicans (46% each), and almost identical for whites (46%), Hispanics (50%) and blacks (52%).

Drug misuse can lead to drug overdose deaths. The number of drug overdose deaths has increased dramatically over recent years, and these deaths are of all genders, ages, and ethnicities.

There were 52,404 drug overdose deaths in 2015, more than triple the 16,849 drug overdose deaths in 1999, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Opioids now account for more than six-in-ten drug overdose deaths.

There are 11.8 million people with opioid misuse (4.4% of the total population) according to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health as shared during a press conference on Sept 7, 2017.

Of the 4.4% includes:

  • 6.9 Million—Rx Hydrocodone
  • 3.9 Million—Rx Oxycodone
  • 228,000—Rx Fentanyl
  • 11.5 Million—Rx Pain Reliever Misusers (97.4% of opioid misusers)
  • 948,000—Heroin Users (8% of opioid misusers)
  • 641,000—Rx Pain Reliever Misusers & Heroin Users (5.4% of opioid misusers)

The number of heroin users increased 2.35 times, up to from 948,000 in 2016 and 828,000 in 2015 compared to 404,000 in 2002, per Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The number of heroin deaths increased 6.33 times up to 13,219 (estimated) heroin deaths in 2016 and 13,101 in 2015 compared to 2,089 in 2002, per CDC National Vital Statistics System.

It is time that the 46% of the U.S. residents who know of someone addicted to drugs take action and get their loved ones to get the help they need to get off drugs and lead a healthy, happy, productive life!
