How Far Would You Go?

A sad trend is spreading across America; people trapped by in the addiction of opioids are finding more and more ways to get their hands on this addictive substance. A few even go as far as endangering and inflicting intentional damage upon a defenseless and ever loyal pet.

Pet with cast

“Heather D. Pereira of Hardin County, KY, was arrested and charged with using a disposable razor to slice open the leg of her 4-year-old retriever on two separate occasions to get her hands on tramadol.”

Tramadol, also known as Ultram—was developed in Germany to be used as a pain reliever for consumption by humans. A research study found that Tramadol was also effective in relieving pain in pets, which made it one of the few drugs appropriate for pet use.

Pills

Tramadol has a tremendous history of being abused in the more impoverished regions of Asia, Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe. The high one can get from heroin and oxycodone can be compared to Tramadol. While not as potent as Oxycodone, Tramadol is an opioid and increases the body's production of dopamine.

Veterinarians across America have become extra aware of the situation but most never catch the incident. “Chad Bailey, the vet who used six to eight stitches to close Pereira’s dog’s initial wounds, told The Post he became suspicious when she returned to his clinic three days after the first visit for more pills—claiming her child accidentally flushed them down the toilet. Pereira, 23, has no kids.” It took Chad Bailey, a veterinarian, two times before he became aware of what was happening.

“There’s little we can do to confirm if clients have been to another veterinarian to purchase drugs,” said Ronald Stone, who runs the Veterinary Medical and Trauma Center in Groveland, Florida. “We just have to be vigilant.”
