Drugs Did Not Just Destroy My Parent’s Lives…

Kid remembering

Growing up, both my parents were addicted to drugs. I actually did not even meet my mom until I was about 8 years old. She was in prison. My mom went right back to her addiction after she was released from prison. I never established a real relationship.

Only years later when she started working and I started working at the same job—that’s the first time we had any kind of bond.

My twin brother and I grew up with our father—also an addict. We were left to fend for ourselves most of the time.

We did not have money and barely made ends meet with help from our aunt.

But as I later discovered, my dad actually had a well-paying job and weekly income. But my dad’s addiction was more important.

My brother is now an addict himself.

I chose the opposite—I stayed focused on school and a job.

But there is one thing I will never be able to regain—a childhood with my parents.

Drugs did not just destroy my parent’s lives, but my brother’s and mine too.
