How Narconon Turned My Life Around
I was born in Newton, Kansas, and raised in Western Oklahoma. I had a great family, and while I did have a bit of a rough time in school, I was active in sports and loved the outdoors. Some of my happiest times were vacationing with my father, who took me to see different parts of America and to see the Chicago Bulls play.
However, when I was 15 years old, I started to experiment with marijuana and alcohol with my friends. This became more and more regular when I was 16, and it progressed to cocaine by the time I was 17. I then started using meth, LSD, ecstasy, and mushrooms, and by the age of 19, I was shooting up meth and coke.
I was feeling very detached from my family and was getting in trouble with the law. I had been very good at hiding my drug use, but by the age of 26, my mother realized something was very wrong and stepped in to help me.
The first rehab center I went to did not help ─ I was doing drugs again within 30 minutes of finishing the program. Then my mother got me to Narconon, and my life turned around. The staff were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and I was amazed to find that there was a way to get off drugs that really worked. I did get off of the drugs, and I started wanting to be part of the group and to help others get off drugs.
That’s why I joined the staff at Narconon and have worked here for a total of 12 years. There is nothing like seeing a student come out of the darkness and into the light. One of the things that stands out to me since being on staff is realizing that I have a purpose: helping people. And I also understand what communication is—I see how important good communication is.
“I learned I had reasons to survive and could survive, and I did not need drugs to do this. And I have now been sober for 17 years.”

My relations with my family now are great, and I feel that I am part of something that is good and that helps my own survival as well as those that I help.
