People never sit down and think about how the addiction gets started. It can start with a toothache, and I would have never thought it would be a toothache that caused me to begin a horrible journey of becoming addicted to opioids.

I started having the back pain at the age of 13, but never took a pain pill for that—until I started going to the dentist for my bad teeth. That’s when I realized my neck and back pain was relieved.

I had lots of pain from teeth troubles. I was prescribed opioids for my teeth problems. I soon realized that it also helped my back and neck pain. To handle the pain, I felt like I needed to take just one more, to make the pain in my neck and back go away. The other effect that drove me to take opioids was the feeling the drug was giving me. Opioids made me feel good and at the same time dulled that pain.

I found myself taking more of the prescribed medicine that was recommended by my doctor and saw myself becoming addicted. I would go to the dentist to get the painkillers and when I could not get them from the dentist I was asking family members. Thankfully, I was able to notice the signs of the addiction and stop myself before I was a full-blown addict. Now that I have got this addiction under control, I have better ways of handling my back and neck pain, such as exercises, and I have found natural supplements to help with any pain I have.
