My Cousin Tim

I had a cousin named Tim. He was an amazing guy growing up always, laughing and having a good time. Tim was the type of person who drew people to him and was always kind no matter the circumstance. He would literally give someone the shirt off of his back to make sure someone did not go without. Tim started smoking marijuana when I was about 8 years old. As kids, we didn’t know that and he still seemed like the same person. Tim’s marijuana use went on for a few years before it escalated into harder substances like meth and cocaine. I watched as the drugs wore my cousin down, reducing him to a fragment of the person I remembered. Tim’s home became cluttered and junky slowly rotting away like his mind.

Tim battled his drug addiction for years. His mother sent him to many 12-step rehabs but every time Tim got out he would go right back to using. Drugs eventually led Tim into legal trouble and he was placed in jail.

The judge let Tim off with a promise that he would move to a state where marijuana was legal. He could smoke marijuana in Colorado and not find himself in any trouble with law enforcement. Tim seemed to get better for a time. Until one night, his mother got a phone call that Tim had been hanging around with the wrong people and had been stabbed multiple times.

My cousin died that night, dropped off in a ditch on the back roads of Colorado.

I find myself wondering what Tim would have been like if he would have done a program like Narconon, that would keep him until he was ready to leave. Not just a 12 step program and out the door you go. If Tim would have been given the opportunity to detox and naturally quit drugs while learning life skills, would he still be alive today? I believe so. I see lives changed here every day. If you or someone you love is in need of help, contact us.
