The Drug Problem in Choctaw – Our Local Community

Drug addiction continues to cause problems in Choctaw. Not long ago, eleven people were arrested on various drug charges following a four month investigation. They were charged with possession and distribution of methamphetamine. In the week before this drug bust, fifteen other individuals were arrested and charged with crimes relating to methamphetamine and unspecified narcotics. Meth is a highly addictive drug that is made by “cooking” cough medicine with a substance such as battery acid. In addition to being highly addictive, it is also extremely toxic and causes great damage to the body. Rounding up some of the individuals responsible for its distribution in our society will undoubtedly help reduce the amount of drugs on the streets, but unless all manufacturers and dealers are caught, it will continue to be an issue.

In addition to meth addiction, our local community is dealing with a sharp rise in prescription drug abuse and the crime associated with such addiction. In particular, drug stores are dealing with robberies on a regular basis as addicts take desperate measures to obtain more medication or dealers seek a cheap (free) drug supply. Local Walgreens branches are fighting back by installing time-delay safes all over Oklahoma.

By storing addictive medications in these safes, the store is making it much harder to pull off a quick robbery. The thief has to wait for the safe to open, leaving more time for authorities to respond and making it more likely that the store’s security cameras will capture a good likeness of them. Statistics in other states show that time-delay safes are effective in deterring crime, so Walgreens hopes for similar results in Oklahoma.
