Oklahoma Leads Nation in Prescription Drug Abuse

America is facing a serious prescription drug abuse problem. Americans use three fourths of the world’s prescription drugs, but represent only one twentieth of the world’s population. Oklahoma leads the nation in prescription drug abuse, with 8.1 percent of the population over the age of twelve using prescription medications for non-medical purposes. Drug overdoses kill more people in the state each year than car crashes, with over 800 deaths. The vast majority of overdose deaths (at least 85% of them) are caused by prescription medications rather than illegal drugs.

Pain medications such as oxycodone and hydrocodone are the most commonly abused prescriptions. These types of medications are classified as narcotics and are considered highly addictive, even when taken exactly as directed by a doctor. Patients often shop around at various clinics to obtain multiple prescriptions, or go to “pill mills” where it is common knowledge that powerful painkillers are prescribed at a high rate. Unfortunately, many pain clinics are not owned by medical professionals, but instead are owned by businessmen looking to make a profit.

Are Florida’s Legislation Efforts A Model For Oklahoma?

Florida used to lead the nation in prescription drug abuse and deaths due to overdoses. They, like Oklahoma, had many pain clinics that churned out tens of thousands of prescriptions per clinic each year. 98% of doctors who prescribed the highest levels of oxycodone had their offices in Florida. In recent years, however, Florida has managed to reduce the rate of deaths due to oxycodone by a whopping 52%. Prescription drug overdoses resulting in death (from any prescription drug) fell by 23%. How did they manage this? Florida passed a law requiring all pain clinics to register with the state. They also now require that pain clinics be owned by licensed physicians or groups of physicians. Licensed clinics may also run pain clinics, but businessmen without a medical license are now banned from ownership. This prevents the prescribing of powerful painkillers from becoming a “cash cow” where the goal is to create many repeat customers by issuing prescriptions by the tens of thousands.

Oklahoma could enact similar regulations, thereby removing the state from the top of the prescription drug abuse list, but unfortunately such efforts by lawmakers have stalled, mostly due to pressure from medical lobby groups.

Despite such setbacks, there are many Oklahomans working tirelessly to help those who have become addicted to drugs. There is a group called ReMerge wthat is dedicated to helping women avoid incarceration. They focus mainly on women who are pregnant or who have minor children, putting them through a twelve to twenty-four month program which offers assistance for such things as transportation, housing and job placement. Participants live in drug-free housing and receive frequent drug tests. Graduates of the program have their felony charges dismissed by the state. The program, which offers help and education rather than punishment, just celebrated the acceptance of its one-hundredth participant. To date, thirty-nine participants have graduated from ReMerge.

Rehabilitation Is The Long-Term Solution For Oklahoma

Efforts such as those offered by ReMerge deserve support from the local community. In addition and in tandem with such efforts, effective drug rehabilitation is the solution to drug addiction. Narconon Arrowhead offers effective, supportive detoxification followed by life education programs that isolate the root causes of addiction (whether to prescription or illegal drugs.) Once the root causes are identified, they are addressed with effective, non-chemical solutions, thereby removing the potential “need” to turn to drugs again in the future to “solve” the same problems.

Addiction to any chemical substance is a real, life-threatening problem. It can destroy the life of an addict and can cause upset and distress in the lives of their loved ones and friends. Entire families can be devastated by one person’s addiction. Friends can be alienated and can feel at a loss as to what to do to handle a seemingly hopeless situation. Something can be done about it, however, and effective drug rehabilitation is the best chance an addict has to turn his life around. By addressing the physical and mental aspects of addiction, a drug addict can begin to lead a happy, productive life free from chemical dependence. Narconon Arrowhead is the ideal drug treatment center with a proven track record of results.
