Though it might be easy (and more comforting) to think of drug addiction as something that happens elsewhere, the truth is that addiction and drug-related problems can happen anywhere, including right in our own back yard. In fact, Seminole County authorities recently arrested twenty-six individuals in connection with a meth ring dealing in methamphetamine made in Mexico. Of the twenty-six arrests, twenty-one were based on warrants issued prior to the bust. Five were arrests done during the course of the bust when individuals were discovered on the premises of the place being raided. This meth ring was responsible for bringing several pounds of meth into our community every month. It will greatly benefit our community to get these drugs off the streets.

There are supposed to be safeguards in place to prevent pharmacies from becoming sources of illegal use of prescriptions due to theft or loss. Pharmacies are supposed to report any missing drugs. They are also supposed to record the filling of prescriptions for any of three classes of medications in the Prescription Monitoring Program. Doctors are supposed to check the PMP at least every six months to determine if their patient already has prescriptions to the drugs they are seeking. This program was implemented to curb a practice known as doctor shopping, in which patients see multiple doctors to obtain multiple prescriptions. It was found recently, however, that some Oklahoma pharmacies are lagging in the performance of their duties. Thousands of dollars of medications have gone missing. Pharmacists were entering false codes into the PMP. This is troublesome, especially considering that Oklahoma has one of the worst prescription drug abuse problems in the nation.
