Prescription Drug Abuse Continues to Rise

Oklahoma is currently in the midst of rapidly rising prescription drug abuse rates. Nationally, prescription drug abuse averages 4.8% of the population over the age of 12. In Oklahoma, that percentage almost doubles to 8.1%. Prescription drug overdoses (painkillers and anxiety medications) kill more people annually than car crashes. Last year, 9.7 million prescriptions were written in Oklahoma for highly addictive painkillers. That is enough pills to give 50 to every person in the entire state! Prescription drug addicts often employ “doctor shopping” in which they receive prescriptions for addictive pain medications like Vicodin or other drugs containing hydrocodone from multiple doctors. The worst offender of this practice known to date had prescriptions from almost 200 different medical professionals. Oklahoma is in the process of passing legislation seeking to curb this practice with the use of a state-wide prescription database.

The price tag for the state government’s war on drug abuse and addiction is nearing 2 billion dollars a year in direct costs (paying for police, hospital visits, medical bills and prison maintenance and staff.) In fact, Oklahoma devotes 26.8 percent of its annual budget to fighting its drug abuse problem.

Drug Addiction Affects Local Communities

In Enid, the county seat of Garfield County, Oklahoma, the drug abuse problem is just as bad as anywhere else in the state. Enid’s population is just over 49,000, making it the ninth most populated city in the state. In recently weeks, Enid has seen several cases of crimes related to drugs in some way. In mid-February, pharmacist Steve Pryor arrived at Scheffe’s Prescription Shop to find that someone had smashed the front door and then stolen prescription medications. Surveillance footage reveals that a man in a hoodie approached the door with a hammer. He proceeded to break the glass and then throw the hammer away. He went into the shop, stole an undisclosed amount of medications, and then left. On his way out of the shop, the perpetrator hit his head and then fell to the ground. He may have been under the influence of the very drugs he was stealing, or may have been suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms. Though either scenario is likely, neither has been confirmed at this time.

A rise in drug abuse often leads to a rise in crime. In Garfield County there were 705 drug or alcohol-related arrests in 2013. Drug addicts develop a tolerance for the drugs they are taking. This leads to an increasing need, which costs more and more money. At the same time, a drug addict is less and less able to hold down a steady job. This combination often results in an addict turning to crime as a means to enable their drug habit. Addicts will steal from family, friends, or perfect strangers in order to obtain money for drugs. Cities with increasing addiction rates will witness a rise in muggings, break-ins and other drug-related crimes, as was seen in Enid with the pharmacy break-in.

Drug addicts need help and support from family and friends to overcome their addiction. This can be difficult for loved ones, as addicts do not often listen to reason and usually don’t want to face the fact that they have a problem. They will intentionally alienate those who love them in an attempt to be left alone to pursue their new lifestyle.

A trusted, reliable solution to any addiction problem is offered at Narconon Arrowhead.  Residents of Enid and its surrounding areas can overcome their addictions through effective detoxification and rehabilitation, allowing them to become contributing members of society once again.  The inpatient treatment available at Narconon Arrowhead treats the physical handlings for cravings that drugs have created in the body and provides real-life solutions to the problems that caused the addict to choose a life of addiction.  This approach to addiction assures that addicts are able to achieve and maintain sobriety.  Addicts will gain confidence and feel self-assured that they will be able to led successful, healthy lives without the use of drugs.

Effective drug rehabilitation can turn whole communities around, one person at a time. As the number of drug addicts decreases, so too does the crime rate. Drug abuse takes a terrible toll on not just the addict, but those associated with them as well. Drug rehabilitation can reverse this effect. Families become happier as they see their loved one succeeding in life again.
