Drug Addiction Treatment Near Midwest City

Narconon Arrowhead has been a leading addiction treatment facility in the United States for 25 years, having helped over 11,000 people over the years.  The leading sources of drug abuse in Oklahoma, including Midwest City, are alcohol, tobacco, painkillers, and illicit street drugs such as cocaine. Alcohol accounts for over 45% of the drug abuse in the state. Effective addiction solutions are important to the residents of Midwest City who have loved ones who are dealing with a deadly drug addiction.

Midwest City struggles with rising drug abuse, along with the rest of the state. Oklahoma was ranked number one in prescription painkiller abuse in a federal survey conducted in 2009. 8.1% of Oklahomans over the age of 12 use painkillers for non-medical purposes. This is almost double the national average.

Drug abuse of any sort is a dangerous and costly problem. The annual cost to Oklahoma (both directly and indirectly) is 7.2 billion dollars. Even worse than the financial burden that drug abuse creates is the human cost. More people die from overdoses of painkillers or anti-anxiety drugs than from car crashes. The number of deaths from drug overdoses has more than doubled in the past ten years, with prescription drugs being the leading cause of death.

Local Cities Take Matters into Their Own Hands

Cities and towns around the state are trying to find ways to combat this growing epidemic. In Nicoma Park, the police department is trying to raise 15,000 – 17,000 dollars to pay for a K-9 unit to fight drug addiction. A K-9 unit is expensive but effective. A specially trained drug-sniffing dog needs to be acquired, usually from overseas. A police officer needs to receive special training in how to operate effectively with his canine partner. Equipment needs to be purchased and one of the existing police vehicles needs to be specially fitted with a kennel. (The police department doesn’t have the budget to purchase an additional vehicle specifically designed for a K-9 unit.)

Nicoma Park police chief Rob Groseclose feels that the addition of a K-9 unit to their police force will greatly increase the police department’s ability to win the battle against drug abuse in Oklahoma County. They would be able to utilize the drug-sniffing dog to locate and then cut off drug supplies at their source.

What Can A Person Already Addicted to Drugs Do?

Availing yourself of drug rehabilitation facilities is the first step on the road to recovery. Nobody ever intends to become a drug addict. Most addicts aren’t aware, at least at first, that they have a problem. By the time they realize how much control drugs have over their lives, addiction has set in and the situation can seem hopeless. Friends and family watch as their loved one spirals out of control. Attempts to reason with an addict can lead nowhere if the person isn’t ready to confront how drugs are ruining their lives. Sooner or later, however, the evidence will be too strong to ignore. As an addict’s professional and personal lives start to crumble, they will reach a point where they will be ready to change.
